African Screen Worlds: Decolonising film and screen studies (2019-2025)
African Screen Worlds: Decolonising Film and Screen Studies’ (2019-2025) is an international, European Research Council-funded research project led by Professor Lindiwe Dovey that explores in particular Africans’ contemporary contributions to diverse, complex screen worlds.
The ‘African Screen Worlds’ project explores Africans’ contributions to contemporary audiovisual cultures and is also interested in putting African cinemas into conversation with other regional cinemas to theorise global screen worlds in more inclusive, nuanced and decolonised ways.
Across six years (2019-2025), the core team has worked with partners and participants from all over the world to produce films and video essays, edited books, articles, and toolkits as well as to curate workshops, conversations, film screenings and panel discussions.
All of the key project outputs are being made available Open Access on the ‘African Screen Worlds’ website as soon as they are completed. These outputs include six films about African filmmaking cultures, as well as the forthcoming co-edited books Contemporary African Screen Worlds (Duke University Press) and Global Screen Worlds (Bloomsbury).
