The examination process and preparing your thesis

Please note that from 15 September 2019 all doctoral researchers submit their examination forms and thesis on PhD Manager.

• Open Access (June 2018)  - guidance on how to prepare your thesis for submission to SOAS Library and SOAS Research Online. (Please also see below if you are funded by RCUK).

• SOAS Declaration MPhil (Doc) or SOAS Declaration MPhil (PDF) - an example declaration text to be included in the thesis
• SOAS Declaration PhD (Doc) or SOAS Declaration PhD (PDF) - an example declaration text to be included in the thesis
• Thesis Title Page Template (Doc) or SOAS MPhil/PhD Title Page (PDF) - an example title page to be included in the thesis

Candidates initially enrolled for their SOAS research degree before September 2016 and/or submitted before 15 September 2019

The below paper forms apply:

• SOAS Examination Entry Form (docx) or SOAS Examination Entry Form (PDF) - form to be submitted two months prior to the submission of the thesis
• SOAS Examination Entry Form (Following Re-entry) (doc) or SOAS Examination Entry Form (Following Re-Entry) (PDF) - form to be submitted two months prior to the re-submission of the thesis
• SOAS Thesis Submission Form (Doc) or SOAS Thesis Submission Form (PDF) - form to be submitted with the thesis (first submission, before viva)
• CASDES Application (Doc) - Doctorate Extension Scheme Application Form for PhD students holding a Tier 4 visa
• RCUK Funded Students: Electronic Thesis Agreement Form (PDF) - form to be submitted by RCUK-funded students who need to make their thesis Open Access no later than 12 months after award.
• RCUK Open Access Guidance PhD Students (PDF) - for RCUK-funded students who need to make their work Open Access no later than 12 months after award.
• SOAS PhD Embargo Request Form (doc) or SOAS PhD Embargo Request Form (PDF) - to request a full embargo on your thesis, meaning your thesis will not be available both in print in SOAS Research and online in SOAS Research Online’ Full embargoes will only be applied after consideration by the Research Ethics Panel and in exceptional circumstances. This form should be submitted as early as you think there may be a reason your thesis needs to be fully embargoed and prior to submission of your thesis.
• Electronic Thesis Agreement (June 2018) (doc) or Electronic Thesis Agreement (June 2018, PDF) - form to be submitted in the electronic copy of the thesis
• Hard copies of theses are not required since September 2020.
