Written by artists whose family heritage was affected by British colonialism, The Waves explores the legacies of empire through contemporary stories based in Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester, Leamington Spa and Edinburgh. The Waves was inspired by an earlier SOAS-Tamasha collaboration, Decolonising History, that explored legacies of empire in the classrooms of SOAS itself.

Shared selections from the dramas will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the playwrights and SOAS researchers to explore what dramatic storytelling and academia offer to current debates about the legacies of imperialism in contemporary Britain.

All attendees will receive an exclusive link to be the first to listen to all five audio dramas in full, to mark their online release. A short drinks reception will follow the event.

The panel will feature:

  • Kamala Santos (playwright)
  • Danielle Fahiya (playwright)
  • Fin Kennedy (Former Artistic Director Tamasha; now of Applied Stories)
  • Boz Temple-Morris (Producer Holy Mountain)
  • Navtej Purewal (SOAS)

Chaired by Eleanor Newbigin (SOAS)
