Dr David Jackman

David Jackman’s research examines the political economy of violence in South Asia. His doctoral ethnography worked with labourers in Dhaka to understand political order in microcosm, detailing street level leaders, criminal economies and political mobilization. Work from this has been published in Development and Change, Environment and Urbanization and the European Journal of Development Research. More recent projects under the Effective States and Inclusive Development (ESID) Research Centre analyse the significance of capital cities to authoritarian states, and contemporary changes in political coalitions and intra-state power in Bangladesh. His post-doctoral research will revisit research sites in Dhaka to examine the lives of urban brokers. David has also worked in the development sector in Bangladesh, holds an MSc degree from the London School of Economics and PhD from the University of Bath.
