Professor Nirmala Rao

Nirmala Rao took her first degree in Economics (Hons) from Delhi University in 1979, and subsequently received her MA and MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She came to the UK in the late 1980s and was awarded her PhD by the University of London in 1993. She joined Goldsmiths College the following year as Lecturer in Politics, where she progressed to a personal chair in 2002. In 2005 Nirmala was appointed as Pro-Warden (Academic) to be that College’s lead on academic affairs,. In August 2008 she took up the post of Vice Principal (Learning & Teaching) at SOAS.

Professor Nirmala Rao's Inaugural Lecture

Nirmala Rao has published widely in the fields of urban governance and public policy and is currently undertaking research on the ways in which the ideas of local democracy evolved in the conversations between India and England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Another stream of research concentrates on comparative studies of city governments. Nirmala was elected as an academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences in 2003. She has extensive experience of public service and has also served as an advisor to a range of public bodies. A Trustee of the Learning from Experience Trust, Nirmala has served on a number of public bodies; Architects Registration Board,as a lay member of the General Council of the Bar, and a non-executive director of Ealing Hospital NHS Trust.
