Biography

Florian is a PhD candidate in economics at SOAS and currently a visiting doctoral researcher at the Macro and Green Finance Lab at the National School of Development, Peking University.

He obtained a BA in Economics & Business with a minor in China Studies at the University of Hamburg and a MSc in Economics from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and Fudan University in Shanghai. He was awarded a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service to study in Shanghai.

Following his studies, he worked in Sino-German cooperation projects in Shanghai and Beijing with a focus on economic and sustainable development. He also gained experience as a research assistant in Germany’s leading think tanks for global economic and development research, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, where he helped establish the Kiel Institute China Initiative, and the German Institute for Development and Sustainability.

His research interests lie in Sustainable Finance, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) topics, and the decarbonisation of the global economy. He has a keen interest in exploring how the financial sector can accelerate the transition to net zero, particularly in developing and emerging economies, and how financial institutions can assess and manage climate risks to mitigate potential disruptions in financial markets.

In his PhD research, Florian is assessing transition-related vulnerabilities of the Chinese economy. Using scenario analysis, the purpose is to gauge the potential impact of major transition risks on the financial system under different transition scenarios. Florian’s research is supported by a scholarship from the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, a think tank for green visions and projects.

Alongside his PhD, he is involved in advising public and private financial institutions in emerging markets in relation to climate risks and sustainable finance to make them ready for the transition to net zero emissions. Florian also organises seminars on the economics of the green transition with the d\carb Future Economy Forum.
