Biography
Dr. Maria Roemer’s research focuses on focuses on how Japanese male artists make an issue of masculinity in contemporary literature and visual cultures.
Maria obtained her Ph.D. in Japanese and Comparative Literature from Heidelberg University including a year as visiting scholar at Cornell University. She has held lectureships at Newcastle University and Birkbeck and has taught Japanese Studies at Heidelberg and Leeds, where she is a Visiting Fellow until 2025. Her work has appeared in Bunron and with Routledge. Her dissertation is available on heiDOK.
Maria is also a Japanese literary translator, specializing in graphic novels (manga), with over 50 titles out in print, as well as contemporary fiction.
