The Centre for Gender Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Kaari Betty Murungi as Professor of Practice. Kaari Murungi is an expert in transitional justice processes, women’s human rights, gender, constitutionalism and governance.

Speaking about the appointment Kaari Betty Murungi said: "I’m absolutely delighted at this opportunity to join the SOAS community. For the last twenty years, my work has focused on advancing gender justice in international criminal justice mechanisms and in peace agreements in conflict and post conflict situations. I am particularly drawn to SOAS’s interdisciplinary approach and focus on seeking solutions to global issues through ideas and scholarship.”

Dr Awino Okech, Chair of the Centre for Gender Studies said: "The Centre for Gender Studies is pleased to welcome Kaari Murungi as a Professor of Practice. Kaari brings over three decades of legal expertise deployed nationally (Kenyan), regionally (Africa) and internationally. Kaari served as the Africa representative on the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for Victims at the International Criminal Court (2010-2013) and as a member of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the 2018 protests in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. More recently, Kaari was a Senior Adviser on Transitional Justice to the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC), the body tasked with oversight for the implementation of the South Sudan peace process. Kaari’s legal expertise is also linked to a history with philanthropy having founded and led Urgent Action Fund Africa - the first African feminist rapid response grant maker. We are thrilled to have our community of students, researchers and engaged citizens at SOAS and globally benefit from Kaari’s wealth of experience."
