London festival spotlights SOAS film on the work of award-winning Kenyan filmmaker
Lindiwe Dovey, Professor of Film and Screen Studies at SOAS University of London, will be premiering her film Out of the Box: The Screen Worlds of Judy Kibinge at this year’s Women of the Lens Festival on 23 November.
The film documents the diverse work and generous leadership style of award-winning Kenyan female filmmaker Judy Kibinge, Executive Founder and Creative Director of Docubox, an organisation working towards the transformation of filmmaking culture in East Africa.
The Women of the Lens Festival is dedicated to reflecting the resilience and innovation of women through a variety of fields and mediums. Out of the Box is one of six films that Lindiwe’s research team has made as part of the ERC-funded African Screen Worlds: Decolonising Film and Screen Studies project (2019-2025), which explores Africa’s contributions to contemporary audiovisual cultures and experiences in a more inclusive, nuanced and decolonised way.
All project outputs will be made accessible on the Screenworlds website when the project formally ends early next year.
Commenting on her experience of directing the film, Professor Dovey said: "It was an immense privilege (and a lot of fun!) to be given the opportunity and access to make a film about one of Africa’s leading filmmakers, Judy Kibinge. I first met Judy at the FESPACO film festival in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in 2009, and she is an inspirational and charismatic person.”
Out of the Box had its Nairobi premiere on International Women’s Day earlier this year and also featured at Cinefemfest in Dakar, Senegal. It also received a nomination for Best Educational Film at the 2023 Learning on Screen Awards.
Further information on the screening can be found via the Women of the Lens Festival website.
