New Professors of Practice to focus on languages, the arts and climate change policy
SOAS University of London's latest cohort of Professors of Practice for 2024 will bring their industry experience in energy policy, art, languages and translation to enrich the university’s academic landscape and contribute to SOAS's ongoing mission of combining academic rigor with practical, real-world expertise.
Professor Wangui wa Goro, a renowned scholar, translator, and activist, working on African languages, will focus on translation, African languages, public outreach, and professionalising Kiswahili teacher training.
Professor Peter Cornwell, a prominent figure at the intersection of culture, engineering, and data preservation will support long-term language-data preservation and enhance digital research culture through workshops and masterclasses.
Oscar-winning visual designer Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) will bring his multidisciplinary expertise in costume design, art direction, and visual arts to SOAS. A series of public lectures, exhibitions and internship opportunities will help to enrich the School of Arts with opportunities to engage with Chinese cultural heritage merged with contemporary art.
This year's diverse group of professionals bring an extraordinary blend of knowledge and international experience to SOAS, reinforcing our commitment to providing students with rich and diverse perspectives on global challenges.
The challenges presented by climate change will be examined by Andrew Norton, former Director of the International Institute for Environment and Development, and former lead social scientist at the World Bank. Andrew will help guide policy engagement, research strategy, and student placements through masterclasses and workshops.
Dr Steven Knell, Vice President, EMEARC Energy Transition Practice Consulting at Wood Mackenzie will refine the Global Energy and Climate Policy programme by bringing industry professionals into the classroom and provide opportunities to mentor students in energy sector research.
