SOAS partners with ACU to deliver new fellowship programme

SOAS has partnered with The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) to tackle contemporary challenges that affect Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through its Commonwealth Fellowship Programme.

The King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme (KCFP) has been created in response to urgent social, economic and environmental issues such as climate change and inequality within the nations.

SIDS are among the most vulnerable countries in the world, facing numerous economic and environmental shocks, youth out-migration and skills shortages in public services, and experiencing disproportionate and deeply damaging effects of climate change.

SOAS is among the first wave of partners and will be supporting the ACU’s three-part interdisciplinary initiative, which will be offering fellowship for mid-career professionals, undergraduate scholarships and PhDs to strengthen community resilience, address skills shortages in public services, alongside various development challenges across communities.

Taking focus on local impact, the fellowship programme will also build capacity on the following:

  • Support the efforts of civil servants, government and mid-career professionals to bolster their understanding and knowledge of climate resilience.
  • Address institutional challenges across education, healthcare and engineering sectors via undergraduate training.
  • Help in the delivery of upskilling academic staff through SOAS’s collaborative PhD offering.

SOAS, as one of the partners in this programme, will be working alongside the ACU to deliver these new and transformative educational opportunities.
