Language Scholarships
Ministry of Education (MOE) Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship (HES)
Huayu Enrichment Scholarships enable recipients to undertake Mandarin courses at language centres in Taiwan. Financial assistance: Monthly stipend of NT$ 25,000.
Application period: 1 February – 31 March, 2023 (applications to be submitted electronically)
Scholarship duration: 3 months, 6 months or 9 months.
In the UK, the HES is administered at the application and selection stage by the British Association for Chinese Studies (BACS). For guidelines, an application form and directions upon applying online, please refer to the BACS website.

Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan Scholarship
Taiwan Scholarships enable recipients to study undergraduate, master’s or doctoral degree programmes, taught in English, Mandarin or a combination of the two languages, at recognised universities in Taiwan.
Financial assistance: - Monthly stipend of NT$ 15,000 for undergraduate / NT$ 20,000 for postgraduate programmes
- Waiver of tuition and certain academic fees up to NTD 40,000 per semester (2 semesters / year) Application period: 1 February to 31 March 2023 (applications to be submitted electronically)
Maximum scholarship duration: 4 years for undergraduate; 2 years for master’s; 4 years for PhD.

Research Grants
Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Taiwan Fellowship
Fellowships provide grants enabling high-level academics & scholars to travel to Taiwan to conduct advanced research related to Taiwan, the Asia-Pacific region, cross-strait relations or Chinese studies.
Provides an economy class return flight and a monthly stipend of: NT$ 50,000 - 60,000.
Application period: May 1 to June 30 in the preceding year (applications to be submitted online).
Fellowship duration: Three to 12-months.

Ministry of Education (MOE) Short-Term Research Award
Available to international scholars wishing to undertake research related to humanities, social sciences, arts and culture in Taiwan.
Application procedure: Applicants should submit requested documents to their research university in Taiwan or MoE- affiliated research institute by the deadline of 30 Sep the preceding year.
Financial assistance: Monthly stipend of NT$ 25,000 (PhD students) or NT$ 40,000 (post-doctoral fellows) and round-trip economy class flight.
Research Grant for Foreign Scholars in Chinese Studies
International scholars are sponsored by The Centre for Chinese Studies to conduct research in Taiwan in the field of Chinese studies and Taiwan studies.
Other Awards & Opportunities
Short-Term Mandarin Programme (STMP) for UK Students
STMP combines fifteen hours of weekly small group lessons in Mandarin with regular cultural workshops and excursions. Programmes run between 2 and 4 weeks and involve groups consisting of at least 15 students from the same academic year (aged 18 upwards).

Available to young people (aged 18-30), the Youth Mobility Scheme visa allows recipients to visit to Taiwan for travel, cultural immersion, study and/or employment without need for specific study or work visas. Applications should be delivered to the Taipei Representative Office in the UK.

Taiwan Foundation for Democracy Fellowships

Chiang Chingkuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange Grants
Available to scholars with an interest in Chinese and Taiwanese culture.
Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL)
The TOCFL is the only Mandarin language test officially recognised in Taiwan and is a mandatory requirement for entry to many programmes covered by the Taiwan Scholarship. The test (reading and listening elements) is generally held in central London each February.
