Course overview
The course is designed to enable learners to communicate in spoken Egyptian Arabic within a limited range of everyday situations. It follows on from the Egyptian Arabic Beginners course. This course is delivered by the Language Centre.
Method
The course is taught in English and Arabic and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, though greater emphasis is placed on the learner’s ability to speak and listen.
This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

Entry requirements and progression route
Some previous knowledge of the language is necessary to join Egyptian Arabic Elementary - participants will have completed Egyptian Arabic Beginners at the SOAS Language Centre, or gained equivalent experience elsewhere. To be able to join Egyptian Arabic Elementary 2, you should have completed an Egyptian Elementary Beginners 1 course at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (approximately 20 hours). The progression route from Egyptian Arabic Elementary 1 is to Elementary 2, from Elementary 2 to Elementary 3.

Structure
Arabic Egyptian Elementary 1
In this course you will:
- Describe places and how to reach destinations
- Give guidance and suggest attractions
- Converse with hotel manager to book a room and ask for facilities
- Describe jobs, family professions and studies
- Compare between salaries around the world using comparative forms
- Prepare for a job interview
- Identify personal belongings and their places
- Talk about accommodations and conveniences
- Describe stolen items and report to a police officer
- Write a party invitation letter
