Course overview
This is a lower advanced Japanese course for learners who have completed the Pre-Advanced levels, with the emphasis on working on authentic materials such as newspapers and television broadcasts, and the correct use of formal expressions.
The course is taught in Japanese and includes coverage of the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and a balance between communicative activities, structure practice and grammar.

Students completing this course are able to progress to Japanese Proficiency, or C2 level in Common European Framework. For more details please see language proficiency levels CEFR). This course is delivered by the Language Centre.
Method
The course is taught in English and Japanese and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and a good balance between understanding the systems of Japanese grammar and vocabulary, developing the skills of comprehending and producing Japanese in speech and writing, guided practice in language usage and use and authentic communicative activities.
This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

Entry requirements and progression route
To be able to join Japanese Advanced 1 you should have completed a Japanese Pre-Advanced course at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (approx. 360 hours). The progression route from Japanese Advanced 1 is to Japanese Advanced 2; from Advanced 2 to Japanese Advanced 3. Upon successful completion of Japanese Advanced 3 you will be able to progress to a Proficiency level course in Japanese.

Structure
Japanese Advanced 1
In this course you will:
- describe and understand stereotypes
- learn and use proverbs (using animal terms etc.)
- express causality
- learn from statistics and write a report
- compare things and evaluate them
- learn correct registers in various communications
Japanese Advanced 2
In this course you will:
- understand Japanese history of events (mainly Heian Era, Edo Era etc.)
- choose right registers when dealing with others
- describe historical persons
- express relationship between language and culture
- learn onomatopoeic/imitative words
- conduct a research and report
Japanese Advanced 3
In this course you will:
- describe dietary life and nutrition
- understand and create Japanese traditional poem, “Tanka”
- learn new modalities
- explain what you can do for environment
- learn and use Japanese prefix/suffix
- express your thoughts on social issues
The above is an indication of content that may be covered over the duration of the course but it could vary depending on the level and progress of students in the class.
