Statement on supporting academic freedom in Zimbabwe after academic refused entry

SOAS University of London Stephen Chan, Professor of World Politics, was refused entry into Zimbabwe on 21 August, two days before the Zimbabwean elections, which are surrounded by controversy. SOAS fully condemns this decision.

Professor Chan has a worldwide reputation as an expert on Southern African issues, having written a series of authoritative books - including on Zimbabwe - published by prestigious houses including Yale University Press and Cambridge University Press.

As an international civil servant he had a key role in pioneering election observation in the process that led to independence for Zimbabwe in 1980. He has since attended all but two of the country's elections and had intended to continue his research in this field.

SOAS is home to the leading research and expertise on the global issues of today – and access to our regions by researchers conducting fieldwork is essential to our work. We are committed to protecting our academic freedom, which includes the freedom to attend and observe elections and their associated practices.
