Course overview
This is a 1-week daytime intensive on campus course aimed at students who have completed MSA Beginners 1 or equivalent, and is designed to enable learners to communicate in Modern Standard Arabic within a limited range of everyday situations.
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the recognised means of formal spoken and written communication. It is used throughout the Arabic-speaking world on official occasions, in education and the media. This course is delivered by the Language Centre.

Method
The course is taught in English and Arabic and includes an appropriate exposure to Arabic grammar and vocabulary, while developing the skills of comprehension in listening and reading, and the skills of expression in speaking and writing.

Structure
Arabic (Modern Standard) Beginners 2
In this course you will:
- talk about people and countries
- describe nationalities
- be familiar with MENA countries and their capitals
- recall the numbers 1-10, then 11-100
- understand conjugation and use of numbers
- navigate a shopping situation
- describe what you have and what you want
- use gender agreement between nouns and adjectives
- know the colours and how to use them
- navigate a party situation
- talk about holidays
- use the days of the week
- describe your daily routine
- learn basic media-related vocabulary
- understand the introduction to the dual and some plural patterns
- understand and recognise past tense verbs

How to apply
This course is suitable for students who have completed the MSA Beginners 1 course at SOAS, or equivalent. Note that students are responsible for self-assessing and checking their level using the course overview/structure PRIOR to enrolling on this course.
Please note that places are first come first served. Enrolments are taken until the course is fully booked, or up to midnight 12 August, whichever is soonest.
Continuing your study
This course is equivalent to completing MSA Beginners 2 level. Students who complete this course may be able to join a Beginners 3 for our next term starting October 2024, or a future term at SOAS Language Centre.
