Biography

Bekri M. Jemal is an Assistant Professor in the School of Governance and Development Studies at Hawassa University and a Virtual Fellow at SOAS Centre for Pan-African Studies, University of London.

Before that, he was a Lecturer and Higher Diploma Programme Leader at the University of Gondar (2008-2016). He has a BA in Political Science and International Relations (2005) and an MA in Development Studies (2011) from Addis Ababa University.

Bekri is an early career academic from Africa with a publication track record and experience in research supervision, coordination, and managing the Ethiopian Journal of Governance and Development. His research interest covers politics, international political economy, and the political economy of development. Principally, he is interested in exploring the impact of hegemonic neoliberalism and the relevance of the developmental state in Africa in the context of global capitalist extractivism.

As a Virtual Fellow of the Centre for Pan-African Studies, Bekri is currently working on collaborative research to explore Africa’s developmental predicaments within the contemporary global political economy as part of the ‘Pan-African Frontiers and Identities: The Remaking of Africa in World Politics’ project. Interested in locating pan-Africanism in African-led development practice and discourse, he is conducting research on ‘Pan-African Developmentalism as a Resistance to Hegemonic Neoliberalism and Extractive Imperialism in the Age of Global Power Restructuring’ with mentorship from Dr Daniel Mulugeta of SOAS.
