College of Development, Economics and Finance

Welcome

Our teaching, research, and knowledge exchange intervene in the key economic, social, and financial challenges of our time. Our scholarship is focused on the regions of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia without losing sight of global interdependencies.

Here, we celebrate interdisciplinarity and pluralism. Our classrooms are vibrant places of debate, fostering intellectual curiosity and grounding the learning experience in the multiple material realities of the Global South. Within the College, you will find world-leading contributions across a wide array of topics ranging from governance, migration, illicit economies, social reproduction, the world of work, sustainability, macroeconomic resilience, and structural transformation, to fintech, among others.

Many colleagues play important roles in advising government, business or the third sector. We generate a proud community of alumni, many of whom successfully continue their journey from SOAS into leadership positions.

"The College is a truly unique place focused on the complex issues around development, economics, finance, and management, all anchored in the SOAS regions.

We act as an important amplifier of context-specific and historically grounded analysis that engages with problems at multiple scales, offering insights with significant policy relevance in a fast-changing world."

— Elisa Van Waeyenberge, Dean of the College of Development, Economics and Finance
