My experience on the SOAS-Effat Museum Studies Programme

Embarking on the joint Museum Studies programme between SOAS and Effat University has been a transformative experience, deeply enriching my professional background in communication and shaping my understanding of the museum sector. This unique programme, sponsored by the Museum Commission in Saudi Arabia, aligns seamlessly with Saudi Vision 2030, which emphasises cultural heritage, education, and the development of creative sectors within the Kingdom.
My understanding of the museum sector significantly grew
The curriculum of the joint degree programme was meticulously crafted, blending theoretical frameworks with practical assignments that broadened my knowledge in the field. From exploring the various museum practices to understanding the beauty of curation and exhibition design, each module challenged me to think critically about the important role of museums in society.

Studying in London, particularly at the lively campus of SOAS, provided me with a global perspective that is essential in the field of museum studies. The vibrant cultural scene in London which is home to many of the world’s most renowned museums has profoundly shaped my understanding of the diverse roles that museums play in society. Each visit to these museums was not just an educational experience; it was an eye-opener to the various ways museums engage with their audiences, tell stories, and preserve history.
There were real-world insights in our lectures
Moreover, my colleagues and I had the privilege of learning from experienced professionals who brought real-world insights into the lectures. Their talks not only enhanced my academic experience but also inspired me to envision my role in contributing to the cultural landscape of the rich heritage of my country. I strongly believe that by integrating international best practices with local cultural contexts, we are poised to elevate the museum experience in Saudi Arabia and contribute meaningfully to the cultural advancement.
