Dobdon Maksarov is a PhD student at the School of History, Religions and Philosophies at SOAS. In 1992, Dobdon became a student at one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Russia, the Tsugol Datsan in Transbaikalia. In 1997, he went to India to continue his monastic training and receive higher Buddhist education. In 2020, after completing 23 years of traditional Buddhist education in the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, including sixteen years of study at Drepung Gomang Monastic University, six years of annual examinations at Gelugpa University, and one year of study at Gyudmed Tantric University, Dobdon received a geshe-lharamba degree in Buddhist philosophy and tantra. In 2022, he completed a master’s degree in Buddhist Studies at SOAS University of London.
