2021 Taiwan Post-New Wave Cinema Project

Project Introduction

After the successful conclusion of our inaugural series last year, the Taiwan Post-New Wave Cinema Project has returned with its much anticipated second edition, which carries through its mission to raise awareness of contemporary Taiwan cinema by presenting a brand new season of director focused film series followed by live Q&A sessions.

Similar to last year, the project will bring together leading film scholars to critically examine the works of some accomplished yet under-discussed filmmakers who have followed the ‘auteurs’ of the late 1980s such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang.

This year’s main series features an extensive collection of films from established directors Yang Ya-che, Chen Yu-hsun and Chen Singing, seeking to showcase the broad variety and diversity of filmmaking talent among Taiwan's Post-New Wave generation.

In celebration of a new generation of women filmmakers in Taiwan cinema, this year’s edition has dedicated a special series to Emerging Female Directors, which includes the works of four up-and-coming female directors, namely Lee Yi-Shan, Chen Ting-Ning, Huang Xi and Tung Shu-Yuan. Through this special series, the project hopes to put a spotlight on the chroniclers of female experience, and to highlight the broad spectrum of voices that make up the vibrant cinema of Taiwan.

Director Q&A sessions and Roundtable events will be held virtually through Microsoft Teams. Online screening links will be sent to those who have registered through each film's Eventbrite page.
