About this event
Dr Letizia Fusini (SOAS Post-doctoral Research Associate)
Abstract
This talk will analyse ways in which tragedy (beiju 悲剧) was received and reinterpreted in May Fourth China, where it was hailed as a 'progressive' ;modern' and 'civilised' literary genre. In particular, it will show how, in reality, the May Fourth reception of tragedy was informed by the rejuvenation of traditional ideas rather than the introduction of purely ‘Western’ theories.
