About this event
In the next Indian Art Circle lecture, Dr Christian Luczanits (David L. Snellgrove Senior Lecturer in Tibetan and Buddhist Art, Department of History of Art and Archaeology, SOAS) will discuss the rich artistic heritage of Mustang in Nepal.
Dr Luczanits has been documenting the artistic heritage of Mustang since 2012 in the context of the research project, Tibetan Buddhist Monastery Collections Today. The most important single collection documented so far is that of Namgyal Monastery, which amounts to 340 sculptures and is the subject of a forthcoming book.
His talk will introduce that book project and demonstrate the relevance of Mustang sculpture for the history of Tibetan sculpture more broadly. He will also discuss sculptures in London collections that relate to the region.
The event will be in person in the Alumni Lecture Theatre, Paul Webley Wing, Senate House at SOAS and via Zoom: for zoom link contact Dr Mehreen Chida-Razvi at indianartcircle.london@gmail.com.
