About this event

A tour of the SOAS Gallery's current exhibition 'Painting Freedom: Indian modernism and its rebels' from a collector's perspective

Due to popular demand, we have added two additional tour dates on 16 and 23 May. Please visit our Eventbrite page to book your free ticket to attend one of these events.

A collector's approach to acquiring art may be quite different from that of a curator or member of museum staff.

painting of Hindu Goddess Annapurna
Early Bengal School oil painting of Jagadharti. Oil on canvas, 1900s, Bengal, India.

In this tour, the enigmatic collector of the artworks in our 'Painting Freedom: Indian Modernism and its rebels' will reveal his process of aquiring his collection, in a field which was and still is largely under-researched. Without numerous connoisseurs in the field, the collector must become an expert in ensuring authenticity, understanding the value of an object, and building a cohesive collection.

Most importantly, the tour will highlight the passion for collecting.

This is sure to be a unique experience, and of great value to anyone working in, or interested in going into auction houses and art sales. It is free and open to the public, but spaces are limited. Sign up on Eventbrite to ensure your place.

Meeting location will be revealed to attendees closer to the event date.
