About this event

In this hands-on working colloquium, we hope to explore and advance the unique possibilities of Philippine Area Studies scholarship when merged with the digital.

Accepting the widest range of possible Philippine studies disciplines and topics in any of the four archival media (text, visual, sound and material culture) we will work with scholars to address issues of access, usability and reception of scholarly work.

The event programme will seek to:

  • gather scholars who are working on areas of Philippine studies research whose primary sources are mainly but not exclusively found in British institutions
  • have these scholars present their preliminary research for discussion and workshopping
  • bring these scholars to the United Kingdom to physically access the primary source materials relevant to their research
  • bring together curators and specialists from the UK holding institutions to discuss ways to make the targeted research resources digitally available online
  • conduct digital humanities workshops that are uniquely relevant to each or any of the accepted research proposals and work towards creating open access digital outputs
  • discuss how scholarship and curatorial practices have changed in the past ten years and how they might change in the future, especially with the emergence of AI

Logistics

The event will be held onsite at SOAS. We will not be live-streaming but we will record some of the plenary sessions.

There are no registration fees, and there are some limited funds available for bursaries. If accepted, kindly email philippinestudies@soas.ac.uk for details.

The 3-day sessions will be open to the general public but seats will be limited. We will be opening up for guest registration by July 2023.
