Farwa Sial (University of Manchester)

Korean Chaebols (family business conglomerates) have been at the heart of the state-capital relations and industrial strategy, conceptualised as the ‘Developmental State’. The historical evolution and expansion of Chaebols has been observed as a multifaceted phenomenon which is a source of growth as well as a product of limited regulation. The latter is a concern owing to Chaebols’ high concentration and extensive diversification across every sector of the economy. This talk looks at the rise and expansion of Chaebol as a feature of Monopoly Capitalism and contributes to on-going research on late capitalism.
