About this event
Jonathan Walz, Rollins College
I report on an historical approach to deep-time African pasts and Africa-Indian Ocean interfaces in northeastern Tanzania, 500–1900 CE. Systematic, problem-oriented research in the lower Pangani (Ruvu) Basin contributes to a transformed understanding of hinterland eastern Africa and its people. Findings from this pedagogy suggest that archaeologists move beyond 'traditional' archaeology on the continent toward more encompassing projects that draw from a range of sources to address multi-scalar questions in a synergistic manner. If archaeologists commit to this critical practice, then, a refreshingly new understanding of African communities awaits us.
