About this event

This talk will introduce Japan Past and Present (JPP), a project launched in March 2024 by the Yanai Initiative at UCLA and Waseda University that aims to realize a more equitable, inclusive, and globally-connected future for the Japanese humanities.

Centered on an online hub and repository for open-access research and teaching resources, JPP mobilizes the strengths of a carefully designed digital platform to encourage interdisciplinary, multilingual scholarship and collaboration in the real world. In addition to discussing the challenges of developing a large-scale, participatory project, this talk will address JPP's mission, core features of its website, current projects, and future initiatives.

About the speaker

Dr. Paula R. Curtis is a historian of medieval Japan based at UCLA. She is presently Operations Leader for Japan Past & Present (JPP), a global information hub and repository that promotes research and teaching in the Japanese humanities across disciplinary, temporal, and geographic borders. Dr. Curtis collaborates in several online projects, including Digital Humanities Japan; an online database for digital resources related to East Asia; and the collection and visualization of job market data in East Asian Studies.
