Join us at SOAS University of London for an event celebrating the heritage of Indonesian manuscripts and their role in fostering academic and cultural exchanges between Indonesia and the UK.

Through research collaborations, manuscript digitisation projects, and cultural performances, these treasured works have served as bridges between the two nations. As we commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations between the UK and Indonesia, this event brings together a policymaker, an academic, and a cultural activist to speak about the connections between the two countries through the lens of manuscript heritage.

Book Talk - Strangers in the Family

In Strangers in the Family, Guo-Quan Seng provides a gendered history of settler Chinese community formation in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period (1816–1942). In dialogue with critical studies of colonial Eurasian intimacies, this book explores Asian-centered inter-ethnic patterns of intimate encounters. It shows how contestations over women's place in marriage and in society were formative of a Chinese racial identity in colonial Indonesia.
