Armed conflict heightens the likelihood and severity of sexual violence by men against women. But everyday gender relations in 'peace time', by making violence seem normal, even recreational, are also a factor that predisposes countries to militarization and war. In this talk I shall explore two situations (in Okinawa and Uganda) where the link between militarism and sexual violence is starkly clear, and show how women are understanding and representing the connections in movements for violence reduction.
