About this event
Professor Charles Tripp
Chair: Professor Avi Shlaim, Oxford University
Professor Paul Webley, Director and Principal of SOAS, will preside.
Charles Tripp will discuss that as in many parts of the world, riots have formed a striking feature of the political landscape in the Middle East throughout its history and into the modern era. As the political context has changed, so has the nature and the significance of the riot, creating new meanings and establishing new sites of confrontation. This talk will seek to explore some of these features, focusing particularly on how riots have been represented and what this can tell us about understandings of politics in the region more generally. It will also look at the theatrical nature of the riot and the ways in which state authorities have used the opportunities of the riot to represent themselves before different audiences, hoping thereby to reinforce their power.
The event will be followed by a reception.
