Arthur R. Kroeber (Gavekal Dragonomics)

Topic

China has set ambitious targets for the coming decades: doubling GDP by 2035, capping carbon emissions by 2030 and getting to net zero emissions by 2060, and achieving global technological leadership in a broad swathe of sectors. It aims to achieve these goals even as it holds fast to a state-driven growth model of questionable efficiency, and faces pressure from the United States which now sees it as a strategic rival. How realistic are China's economic and technological ambitions? And is technological "de-coupling" between the world's two superpowers possible, given the deep economic interdependence between the two?

Biography

Arthur R. Kroeber is a partner and head of research at Gavekal, a Hong Kong-based economic research firm, and founder of its China-focused Dragonomics research service. Before establishing Dragonomics in 2002, he spent fifteen years as a financial and economic journalist in China and South Asia. He is adjunct professor of economics at the NYU Stern School of Business, a senior non-resident fellow of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center in Beijing, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the National Committee on US-China Relations. His book China’s Economy: What Everyone Needs to Know (2nd edition 2020) is published by Oxford University Press.
