About this event
Magnus Marsden (Department of Anthropology and Sociology, SOAS)
The paper explores three different scales at which mobility and migration are an important dimension of the everyday lives of village Muslims in Chitral, northern Pakistan. These scales include local travel within Chitral, the in-migration of refugees and agricultural labourers to the region from Afghanistan and Tajikistan, and the migration of Chitrali Muslims as migrant labourers themselves to Gulf cities, especially Dubai. Through ethnographic considerations of the ways in which these different yet connected scales of mobility contribute to the fashioning of self-other relations in such varying contexts, the paper seeks to contribute to wider debates concerning the use of concepts of scale to ethnographic analysis and description.
