This study presents an example of ‘ordinary’ readers’ reviews that illustrates the changing views of (re)translation and the negotiation of translation norms in 21st-century Japan. The seminar will focus on the third Japanese version of J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951), published in 2003 and translated by Haruki Murakami.

William Franklin Sands was the highest-ranking foreign adviser in the Korean government in the twilight years of the Choson dynasty. His book, entitled Undiplomatic Memories, first published in 1930, has been the seemingly definitive account of his life and career in Seoul. However, his papers paint a much more complex picture of the events in Korea that Sands participated in leading up to the Russo-Japanese War.

In this event at the Japan Research Centre, Francesca Le Lohé and Akiko Kubota will offer insight into their collaborative process on the new piece for biwa which highlights the life and work of feminist anarchist Ito Noe / 伊藤野枝 (1895-1923). A demonstration of the biwa and extracts of Francesca's new piece will also be performed live by Akiko Kubota.
