About this event

Dr Burchiellaro will be joining the Centre for Gender Studies to discuss what is the value of the category and analytic 'queer.' Queerness’ emancipatory potential is increasingly being co-opted and folded into various kinds of violent capital-accumulating projects. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork conducted in London and Buenos Aires and personal reflection, the talk explores the ways in which queerness lubricates gentrification in urban space, focusing on the labor that queerness and queers perform in these contexts, the value it generates, and for whom.

At the same time, the talk also sketches avenues for unlocking its more utopian capacities, envisioning ways to nurture its potential for world-building beyond attempts to harness its value in the making of alternative emancipatory possibilities.
