Biography
Haruka Saito is a doctoral researcher funded by the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE) in the Department of Religions and Philosophies at SOAS University of London.
She received her BA in Anthropology from University of California, Berkeley and MA in Buddhist Studies from SOAS University of London. Her research focuses on Buddhist practices and rituals in medieval Japan. In particular, she is interested in how Buddhist teachings were translated into practice from written to performance as well as how written materials are performed in ritual settings.
Her current research examines how prayers work as a "connection” between ascetic practice and devotional practice in repentance rituals in medieval Japan.
