Biography
Marcos Centeno joined the Department of Cultures and Languages at Birkbeck University of London, as Japanese programmes director, after being lecturer in Japanese Film at SOAS, where he convened the MA Global Cinemas and the Transcultural.
His research revolves around documentary film, representation of minorities, memory, transnationality, migration of images, film theory produced in Japan and postwar avant-garde. His project "Japanese Transnational Cinema" has been funded by Sasakawa and Daiwa foundations, Waseda and MEXT.
His work on the representation of the Ainu people has received several prizes, including his full-length documentary film, Ainu. Pathways to Memory, which has been translated into several languages. He has collaborated in research projects in Japan and several European countries, is AEJE (Asociación de Estudios Japoneses en España) steering committee member and was Research Associate at Waseda University, Research and Teaching Fellow at University of Valencia and as well as visiting researcher at Ochanomizu University, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 and Goethe Universität Frankfurt.
Research interests
Japanese Cinema particularly non-fiction formats, representation of minorities, Ainu people, transnationality, memory, film theory and postwar avant-garde.
