Dr Yuiko Asaba awarded prestigious American Musicological Society Subvention for Publication
Dr Yuiko Asaba – Lecturer in Music – has received a prestigious book subvention award for her book, Tango in Japan: Cosmopolitanism beyond the West (University of Hawai‘i Press), which will be published in early 2025.
Serving as the first in-depth work on the Japan-Argentina musical relation, this book reveals modern transformations in Japan and Argentina through the popularity of tango in Japan, covering from the 1910s to the present day. Each chapter illuminates the vibrant ways in which Japanese musicians, dancers, aficionados, and wider public have, since the early twentieth century, approached Argentine tango as a vehicle of expression, entertainment, and academic pursuit.
This funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the generous contributions of many individual donors. Awarded twice annually, the Publications Committee of the American Musicological Society makes available such funds to help with expenses involved in the publication of pioneering works of musical scholarship.
