German Climate Envoy Jennifer Morgan on Effective Climate Diplomacy

The SOAS Centre for Energy and Climate Policy and the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance in cooperation with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Kingdom hosted a speech and Q&A with Jennifer Morgan, State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action in the German Federal Foreign Office during London Climate Action Week (LCAW).

Held between June 24 and July 4, LCAW is the largest independent climate gathering in Europe, bringing together world-leading climate professionals and communities for a week's worth of events discussing solutions to the climate emergency.

Dr Harald Heubaum opened the event pointing to Morgan's long career as an internationally recognised advocate for climate action, including as former Executive Director of Greenpeace International. During her talk to 60 SOAS students and climate and energy practitioners, Morgan framed climate change as the biggest security and foreign policy issue of our time and emphasised a focus on justice as at the heart of climate foreign policy.

During the Q&A, she laid out the German government's priorities ahead of COP28 and discussed ways in which climate diplomacy could be made more effective.
