Qatar International Court co-hosts webinar on Alternative Dispute Resolution in Islamic and Middle Eastern Law
The Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC), in cooperation with SOAS University of London, delivered an interactive webinar session on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in Islamic and Middle Eastern law Thursday 8 April 2021.
Moderated by Dr. Jonathan Ercanbrack, Chair of the Centre of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law and Senior Lecturer in Transnational Financial Law at SOAS, the webinar introduced legal professionals in Qatar and beyond to practical insights on the arbitration practice in Qatar and Turkey, offering an in-depth look into the latest arbitration trends and controversies in the region. The session included a lively Q&A and general discussion from attendees, who joined virtually from across the world.
Distinguished speakers included Dr. Zain Al Abdin Sharar, Senior Legal Counsel at QICDRC’s CEO Office, who discussed the challenges and opportunities of arbitration in Qatar. Dr. Amel Makhlouf, MCIArb, Lecturer in Law and Research Associate at SOAS, spoke about the use of alternative dispute resolution in Islamic law; while Att Turgut Aycan Özcan, Head of International Arbitration Practice at LEXIST Law Firm, Istanbul, tackled arbitration practice in Turkey as a bridge between Asia and Europe.
Dr. Sharar commented on the event: “We are pleased to bring together arbitration and dispute resolution practitioners, arbitrators, counsel, academics and professionals in Qatar and beyond. Through dialogue and practical insights, legal practitioners can grow their understanding of a specialised aspect of alternative dispute resolution that is highly relevant to our region.”
