SOAS 11th in the UK for peace, justice and strong institutions in THE rankings
SOAS University of London is one of the world’s top performing universities for one of the UN’s sustainable development goals, according to the Times Higher Education impact rankings.
In the category of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, SOAS ranks 11 in the UK, and 47th internationally. The 2024 rankings assess universities’ global performance against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. For the category of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, THE assesses a detailed set of indicators to evaluate universities’ contributions towards promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions.
This includes research on peace and justice initiatives and programmes that advocate for human rights and legal equality, the university’s collaborations with government bodies, contributions to national legislation and frameworks that promote peace and justice, and the proportion of graduates qualified to enter professions in law, civil enforcement and related fields.
SOAS offers a range of degree programmes related to peace and justice studies:
- The SOAS School of Law, Gender, and Media offers an LLM in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice, focusing on legal approaches to human rights, transitional justice, and conflict resolution.
- The Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy offers an MA in International Studies and Diplomacy, which addresses global governance, international law, and the promotion of peace and justice.
Recently, SOAS joined forces with the National School of Government of South Africa to advance public sector development in South Africa. The collaboration aims to foster knowledge and research exchange, signifying a shared commitment to promoting effective governance, institutional capacity-building, and sustainable development in South Africa and beyond.
In a report about the impact of councils' climate emergency declarations. Law students participated in a pro bono environmental policy clinic to urge local authorities in the UK to act on their climate emergency declarations (CEDs). SOAS also launched a joint environmental justice degree with NLU Delhi which hopes to stimulate academic conversations about climate justice. Graduates can continue their learning into careers in research, policy studies and international non-governmental and governmental organisations.
