Hosted by SERAYA - a podcast on cultural heritage, art and history, Panggah Ardiyansyah and Wieske Sapardan take part in a conversation about the history of restitution in Indonesia, its meanings as well as future challenges. The podcast gives a brief introduction into the upcoming edited volume, titled Returning Southeast Asia’s Past: Objects, Museums, and Restitution, as part of SOAS-NUS Press book series on the art and archaeology of Southeast Asia. The volume is co-edited by Panggah and Prof Louise Tythacott of Northumbria University, and in which Wieske has contributed a chapter. It explores the lives of objects which have been repatriated from the West to museums in Southeast Asia, and is the first edited volume entirely devoted to object restitution to this region of the world.
Panggah Ardiyansyah and Wieske Sapardan are both SOAS alumni, having received Alphawood Scholarships to complete the MA History of Art and/or Archaeology degree programme. Panggah will return to SOAS on next academic year to undertake a doctoral study on a topic related to the history of Hindu-Buddhist materials from Indonesia.
