SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance launches new study 'Scaling Up Green Investment in the Global South'
The SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance launched a new study on Scaling Up Green Investment in the Global South: Strengthening Domestic Financial Resource Mobilisation and Attracting Patient International Capital during the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Washington, DC.
The study was authored by Professor Ulrich Volz and Senior Research Fellows Dr Yuen Lo and Vaibhav Mishra.
The study calls for a much larger role of public development banks at the national and international level in developing sustainable project pipelines and in financing these. It puts forward proposals how multinational development banks and international development finance institutions can support national development banks and empower them to play a much more prominent role in mobilising domestic capital and channelling it into sustainable investments. It also highlights the potential of digital approaches to build capital market infrastructures and develop debt instruments that better meet the specific needs of developing economies and broaden the investor base.
Professor Ulrich Volz, the Director of the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance, presented the key messages of the study to senior executives and officials of development finance institutions and multilateral development banks. The event was organised by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which funded the study, and the International Development Finance Club. Professor Volz’s presentation was followed by an impulse response by Javier Díaz Fajardo, President of Bancoldex, the Colombian development bank, and co-chair of the International Development Finance Club.
The event was opened by BMZ Director General Dirk Meyer and Dr Susan Lund, Vice President for Economics and Private Sector for Development at the International Finance Corporation. Closing remarks were delivered by Christian Krämer, Member of the Management Committee of KfW Development Bank. The event was moderated by Dr Barbara Buchner, Global Managing Director of the Climate Policy Initiative and Professor in Practice at the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance.
The SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance will host a London launch event of the study at SOAS on 7 November in the SOAS Alumni Lecture Theatre. A presentation of the report by Professor Volz will be followed by a panel discussion with Amal-Lee Amin (Managing Director and Head of Climate, Diversity and Advisory at British International Investment), Professor Sean Kidney (CEO of the Climate Bonds Initiative and Professor in Practice of Sustainable Finance at SOAS), and Dr Nicola Ranger (Director of the Global Finance and Economy Group at the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford).
