SOAS students visit Mongolian Embassy to mark anniversary of Genghis Khan’s birth

On the eve of the traditional birthday of Genghis Khan, the Mongolian embassy in London invited students and teachers of the Mongolian language at SOAS for a celebratory reception of Mongolian culture and traditions.

Dr Lars Laamann, Senior Lecturer in the History of China and PhD students who study Mongolian and Manchu attended the event on Wednesday 23 November.

Here at SOAS, classes are taught by Cambridge-based lecturer Tergil to a class coordinated by Dr Laamann. Most students also participate in the Manchu language programme, which has been offered on an informal basis for over ten years.

The special feature of the SOAS language course is that it uses exclusively traditional Mongolian script, which is set to become the official script in the Republic of Mongolia as of 2025 and which has always been in use in Inner Mongolia. With Mongolian re-established at SOAS for the first time since the days of Prof. Charles Bawden, Central Asia is now once again an important pursuit at our School.
