SOAS's commitment to championing researchers recognised
SOAS has received the HR Excellence in Research Award for its 12th year, recognising our continued commitment to supporting and developing our research community.
The award is an important mechanism for implementing the principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, an agreement between universities, research institutes and funders to support the career development of researchers in the UK.
SOAS was reviewed in November 2024 by Vitae, the global leader in supporting the professional development of researchers. The panel’s feedback was immensely positive, highlighting the hard work undertaken at the organisation to champion researchers.
Professor Laura Hammond, Deputy Vice Chancellor Research & Knowledge Exchange, said:
“Our research community has a critical role in finding solutions to global challenges and it is essential that SOAS provides a platform where our experts can thrive in their fields and have real-world impact, particularly in the current climate.
“We are pleased our work to support our researchers continues to be recognised through this award demonstrating our long-term commitment to their career development.
“We look forward to continuing to enhance and strengthen our research-intensive environment at SOAS.”
Some of the initiatives noted in the review include offering a mentoring framework and providing a minimum number of days of professional development, recognising that researchers will pursue careers across a wide range of employment sectors.
The concordat supports the career development of researchers by setting out the expectations and responsibilities of researchers, their managers, employers, and funders. It aims to increase the attractiveness and sustainability of research careers in the UK and to improve the quantity, quality, and impact of research for the benefit of UK society.
There are currently 82 Vitae UK member institutions with this award.
