Biography
Sakshi Sharda is currently a PhD Candidate at the Department of Law, SOAS and she is the recipient of the Ubel DTP scholarship.
Sakshi is currently working on her thesis titled, “An Ethnographic Study of Emotions in the Family Courtroom: A Case Study of Punjab and Haryana”. Her current research lies at the intersection of law, political philosophy and gender. Her doctoral research is trying to shed light on how political emotions are employed as tools to discipline female litigants within the folds of acceptable femininity within family courtrooms in India. Sakshi is also interested in how law interacts with society, specially focusing on legal statutes which are designed to help women in the letter of law but adversely impact gender justice.
Before beginning her studies at SOAS, Sakshi has successfully completed her MPhil in Political Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her dissertation was titled, “Understanding the ‘women’s question’ in the Indian Parliament: A legal history of select civil and criminal laws. The dissertation details the patriarchal construction of womanhood that serves as the foundation of the Indian State. The thesis’ primary location is the politico-legal system of the Indian State, and it studies the intersection of law, state, and woman’s sexuality in India.
The research methodology relied primarily on discourse analysis of three civil and criminal laws employed by the Indian State to control a citizen’s sexuality and the Constituent Assembly Debates. The dissertation attempts to create a historical timeline to recognize both similarities and differences in understanding womanhood in India. Sakshi has also worked as an Editorial Consultant with Routledge in their global editorial enhancement team. She is also the Senior Editor in an online journal called TheDaak, a small organisation which caters to upcoming researchers to public their research articles and book reviews.
At SOAS, she has been employed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the course Law and Society in South Asia. She has also previously worked as a teaching fellow for Qualitative Research Methods at Ashoka University, New Delhi.
