Enrolment and Student Loans
There are a few steps that must be completed before we can confirm your registration to Student Finance for your Maintenance Loan or Postgraduate Loan payment to be released.
Step 1
Confirm your details
Complete ‘Confirm my details’ on online registration - you will be sent an e-mail from SOAS about how to do this before Welcome Week. You should enter the amount of your tuition fees covered by Student Finance in the "Student Finance Direct" box.
Step 2
Record matching
The Fees and Funding will then be able to link up your Student Finance loan record with your SOAS enrolment record - this may take up to 3-5 working days. New Students must have enrolled in person and shown your ID before we can confirm your registration to Student Finance to release your funding.
Continuing Students - we will be able to confirm registration once your loan and enrolment records are complete.
Step 3
Confirmation of registration/enrolment
Once you have fully enrolled and the steps above are complete, the Fees and Funding team will be able to include you in the daily returns of completed records to Student Finance which begin from the first day of the autumn term. This confirms your registration and enrolment onto your degree with Student Finance.
Please be aware that it can take 3-5 working days for the completed enrolment record and loan records to match up and for Student Finance to make the payment.
Step 4
Student Finance will make the first maintenance payment 3-5 working days after receiving confirmation of enrolment.
If your loan application has not been approved by enrolment:
Undergraduates
If you don’t have an approved Tuition Fee Loan in place because you have just recently applied or you’re having difficulties with your loan application, then you will need to visit the Fees and Funding team on campus during the enrolment period to discuss your situation before you can be enrolled.
We will need to see evidence that you have applied to Student Finance and ask you to complete a funding questionnaire and declaration form as we wait for Student Finance to complete their checks. You will be provided 6 weeks to secure funding by Student Finance. It is your responsibility to follow up with Student Finance and provide any necessary evidence they require. If your loan application is refused, you will be responsible for paying the fees yourself.
Postgraduate
If your loan has not been approved before you’re required to complete online enrolment, you will be placed on the instalment plan for self-payers and will need to pay 50% of your fees to be enrolled. If your loan is subsequently approved, you can be transferred to the instalment plan for those with a Postgraduate Loan.
Contact the Student Advice Service if you are having difficulty with your loan application as they can support you with this process.
