What we offer
SOAS’ Access, Participation and Student Success team offer an exciting programme of activities to inform, inspire and engage your students.
This offer is available to state-maintained schools, colleges and academies, and we are particularly keen to engage with Pupil Premium learners as part of our work to increase progression to higher education.

Supporting Subject Literacy (Y8 History, Y10 Geography, or Y10 Citizenship)
We are excited to offer you a unique opportunity for your students to engage deeply with SOAS perspectives in Geography, History or Citizenship. Each of these projects:
- Takes place over 6 weeks (on dates agreed with you)
- Is delivered by SOAS in your school (in lessons or off-timetable)
- Supports your teaching
- Develops subject literacy and critical thinking skills
- Is fun!
The Geography and Citizenship projects are for Year 10 pupils, and the History project is for Year 8. Please read the information below, register your interest, and we will then get back to you to set the project up and discuss possible dates for delivery.
Supporting Year 10 Citizenship
Designed specifically to enrich the understanding of crucial topics in Citizenship Studies, this programme offers a comprehensive exploration into various facets of global politics. The topics are:
- Introduction to Global Politics: providing a foundational understanding of global politics structures and dynamics. Explore how various actors interact, and think about how the UK is governed and the purpose of the EU
- Superpowers and Power Dynamics: examining the concept of superpowers and the mechanisms through which they exert influence on the global stage
- Democratic and Undemocratic Systems: analysing different political systems worldwide, highlighting both democratic and undemocratic models. Examine revolutionary mechanisms on how citizens fight back (e.g. Cuba)
- Case Study Analysis: investigating a significant event in global history, offering critical insights into its implications and repercussions
- Human Rights Advocacy: exploring the importance of human rights and the role they play in shaping international relations and policies. Evoking discussions and debates on 'whether human rights should be adapted to local cultures, or should all people everywhere have the same rights?'
- Migration and Displacement: understanding the complexities surrounding migration and the plight of displaced populations across the globe.
The programme aligns with the Key Stage 4 Citizenship curriculum and provides students with invaluable knowledge and perspectives to excel in their academic endeavours and beyond.

Supporting GCSE Geography
The Geography programme offers an exploration into key themes and concepts within Development Studies. Over the course of six weeks, pupils will engage deeply with the following critical topics:
- Defining Development: providing a fundamental understanding of the multifaceted concept of development and its various dimensions
- Understanding Dependency Theory: delving into Dependency Theory to analyse the relationships between developed and developing nations, and the implications for global development
- Development Colonialism: examining the historical and contemporary impacts of colonialism on development trajectories, and its enduring legacies
- The Faces of Inequality: exploring the complex manifestations of inequality across different regions and demographics, and its implications for sustainable development
- India's Development Story: investigating the remarkable development journey of India, analysing key factors, challenges, and successes
- Poster Project: engaging in a hands-on poster project to highlight their understanding of development concepts, fostering creativity and critical thinking skills
Our programme aligns with the GCSE Geography curriculum and provides students with invaluable knowledge, perspectives and skill development to excel in their academic endeavours and beyond.
