Electronic resources


The Library provides access to many resources in electronic format that complement the Library's print collection and support research into the regions of Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
This guide aims to provide a quick and easy way to access the various collections held in e-format.
Accessing electronic resources
To access e-resources (databases, e-journals, e-books etc) off-campus SOAS staff and students can use their SOAS id and password - the same as for SOAS e-mail, computers etc. Due to licensing restrictions we are only able to provide off-campus access to most e-resources for current SOAS students and staff.

Walk-in access
External library users including SCONUL Access and Alumni members can access most of the e-resources at SOAS Library. To access these e-resources users will need to have a library membership card and log in details.
To log in, your user name is the library card number starting with an LW, for example LW12345-67 and a memorable date as your password, in this format dd-Mmm-yyyy.
External library users can use e-resources on
- Three terminals on Level E close to the enquiry desk
Users can consult the SOAS Library catalogue and A-Z list of Databases as well as some e-books available on the e-Books web page.
Resources can be downloaded to an external drive, such as a USB memory stick.
Users are reminded to comply with copyright guidelines and terms of use when downloading e-resources.
Alumni access
Alumni members can access e-resources at the Library premises by using the Walk-In user PCs.
To access these resources students need to use the login details printed on the library card starting with an alum, for example alum-12345 and a memorable date as your password, in this format dd-Mmm-yy.
Alumni members have off-campus access to JSTOR archival content and Project Muse database. To access this resource you will need to register with the SOAS Alumni website (free).
To access JSTOR and Project Muse users need to go via the SOAS Alumni website.
