SOAS statement on the tragic death of law student Hussain Chaudhry
19 March 2021
We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our students, Hussain Chaudhry, a first year Law student. Hussain died yesterday in tragic circumstances, defending his mother in an attack, in the course of which she and his brother Hasan, also a SOAS student, were both injured. Both Hasan and his mother are recovering and we wish them a swift return to health.
In a message to all Law students on Thursday, Scott Newton, Head of the School of Law, Hussain’s academic advisor, Dr Samia Bano, and colleagues from the School said:
“We will remember Hussain as a very kind and thoughtful student who was excited to be studying law and brought this enthusiasm to his classes and his interactions. Hussain had high ambitions and equally high aptitude and promise. All of us mourn his death and our love, prayers and condolences go out to his brothers Hasan and Aysh, also a SOAS Law graduate, and his sister Afia, a SOAS History graduate, and to his parents, extended family, and friends.”
